Sudden Sunset above the Busy City

SUDDEN SUNSET

You never start to notice,

Until the clouds are pink up high,

And the treetops shine like gold,

While darkness deepens the sky.

You never start to notice,

Until the sun is turning red,

And it hangs low in the sky,

While the world lifts its head.

You never start to notice,

Until the trees stand still as death,

And even the calls of birds pause,

While everything holds its breath.

You never start to notice,

Until cold shadows creep through the lands,

And the stars pierce the sky like shining pins,

While the mountains stretch out their hands.

You never start to notice,

Until the realm of light disappears,

And the night-birds haunt the sky,

While the lakes turn into black mirrors.

You just begin to notice,

But by then the moon’s your only guide,

And the darkness makes you want the light,

While the weary world breathes a sigh.
